I think I have John W. parents AND grandparents! I will send you all the census records so you can look at them yourself. These are all Union Twp. Perry Co. IN 1910 census John W. Elder, age 30 (b.1879 from you) Indiana wife, Florence, age 30 (b.1879 from you) Indiana next door, Joseph Elder, age 58 b. @ 1852 Indiana wife, Elizabeth, age 57 b. @ 1853 Indiana I was curious about Joseph and Elizabeth so went to -- 1900 and found: John H. Elder, age 54 b. 1846 Indiana wife, Josephine, age 48 b. 1851 Indiana next door, Joseph F.? Elder age 48, b. June 1851 Indiana wife, Elizabeth age 47 b. June 185? Indiana They were married for 26 years and Elizabeth had given birth to 6 children 5 still living. children listed: Gus E. age 24, b. Jan 1876 Oscar J. age 22, b. Nov 1877? John W. age 21, b. May 1879 -- yours? I think so. Mary A. age 19 b. Apr 1881 Jane E. age 14 b. June 1885 I thought it was possible for John H. age 54 and Joseph age 48 to be brothers. 1880 would be the next back as there is no 1890. 1880 census John H. Elder, age ? wife, Josephine, age 29 children Mary age 4 Susan age 2 next, Joseph age 28 Elizabeth age 27 children, Auguston age 4 (no doubt this is Gus) James A. age 2 (Oscar J.?) John ? age 1 next, Silvester Elder age 35 wife, Sarah J. age 31 children, Mary M. age 12 Allie? A age 7 E??? age 7 -- twins? James A. age 4 Sarah age 2 Ruth age 2/12 April Now we have THREE possible brothers? John H., Joseph and Silvester. Did not find Joseph in 1870 so went to: 1860 Joseph age 44, b @ 1816 KENTUCKY wife, M??y, age 39 b. @ 1821 Indiana children, Silvester age 15 b. @ 1845 John H. age 14 b. @ 1846 James A. age 12 b @ 1848 Sarah A. age 10 b. @ 1850 Joseph F. age 8 b. @ 1852 NOTE! Nancy ?. age 6 b. @ 1854 Alma A. age 3 b. @ 1857 Aita? A. age 3 b. @ 1857 twins? Went back to the 1870 census trying to find this family. 1870 MARY ELDER age 50 b. @ 1820 (Joseph must have died between 1860 and 1870) children, James A. age 22 b. @ 1848 Joseph F. age 18 b. @ 1852 NOTE! Nancy J. age 16 b. @ 1854 Alma M. age 12 b. @ 1858 Alla? A. age 12 b. @ 1858 twins? Then to the 1850 census Joseph Elder age 34, born KENTUCKY wife, Mary age 30, b Indiana children, Susan age 7 Silvester age 5 John H. age 4 James A age 2 Sarah A. age 1 I would guess that this Joseph came to Indiana either with his parents as a child or as a young man. His marriage record to Mary should be in Indiana probably in the early 1840s as first child, Susan was born @ 1853. We could use the oldest child in each family to guess an approximate date for the marriage record. Isn't this neat? All of the above could and should be proved with land records, wills, marriage records, possible baptism records, et cetera. -- ------------------------------------- The 1880 has your John listed as what looks like "John Jo". What I thought was perhaps he was named John Joseph and maybe they even had added the Wesley for a third name? I would guess that Calvin saw this census and used the John J. Hopefully he will answer you and do the corrections. The BIG question is how much did he document on the direct lines beyond this generation. Those you would be interested in too. There are some good clues for you on this -- dates, et cetera. Plus the name Virona Elizabeth SWEAT. Yesterday I couldn't get into genealogy.com. Need to try this morning. Of course I was so disgusted! Tried off and on all day. Not sure if they were completely down, (I was able to do a search) or if just too busy because of the holiday. So I went to the Familysearch.com (the Mormon site) -- was going to send to you this morning: Birth for Sylvester ELDER - 17 Aug 1844, Leopold, Perry, IN - parents - Joseph ELDER and Polly Mary MILLER. The parents names agree with what Calvin Sweat has. Then: Marriage record for: Sylvester ELDER, parents, Joseph ELDER & Mary MILLER, Spouse, SARAH J. JARBOE!!! 30 Apr 1867. You can see in the census record that Silvester's (sic) wife was Sarah J. so would guess this is indeed yours. Probably Sarah Jane. And, I am thinking - it could be very possible that Joseph b. abt 1816 and wife Mary named their first son after Joseph's father. --Silvester. Then, if we use an approximate 25 years for a generation, we would be looking for a Sylvester ELDER b. abt 1791. This is only a starting point -- some of these men were still having kids in their late years with new wives. :-) But I do think the name Sylvester/Silvester is worth looking at. -- Perry County, IN was created 7 Sept 1814 from Warrick and Gibson counties. The County Clerk has marriage, divorce, probate records (wills and estate settlements) and Court records from 1813; County Recorder has land records from 1813; County Health Department has birth and death records from 1890. A Hint -- The Everton has the 10th edition of the Handybook on special sale through today for $19.95, plus shipping - regular $59.95. It is one of the best reference books I have seen for genealogy. I have used it since the early 80s. You can go online and read about it. http://www.everton.com/shopper/productview.php?SKU=1&Category=books To order call their 800 number 1-800-443-6325 - I don't think they have a secure site! |
