- In 1874, the Stones moved to Mill Valley, near
Amherst, Massachusetts. In addition to farming, Fred Stone
supported his family by a variety of small business ventures
- Children were quite successful. Harlan F.
Stone was Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court. His brother
Winthrop was President of Purdue University when he was killed in
a rock-climbing accident. A very ambitious and adventurous branch
of the family.
