In the Cheshire County Gazetteer of 1736-1888 compiled and published by
Hamilton Child under Town of Hinsdale.
Josiah Butler, an early settler, located on road 6. He early cleared
his farm and opened his house as a tavern, being on what at that time the direct
road from Mass. to Chesterfield and places north. Frequently it is said
his house was filled with guests and his yard filled with the conveyance of
pioneers who were on their way to pioneer homes. Here he continued to
reside until his death at an advanced age. He was the father of two sons
and six daughters. His wife survived him and married Major Hubbard of
Chesterfield. Thomas, the eldest son, married a daughter of Phillip Barret
of Hinsdale and had six sons and six daughters.
Jonathan, the youngest son of Josiah, married Gracie, daughter of Major
Hubbard of Chesterfield. He first settled in Hinsdale, where he lived the
remainder of his life, dying at the grand age of 97. He was the father of
7 sons and 1 daughter.
